Search engines have the potential to direct huge amounts of traffic to your website, in fact, search engines are the main sources of visitors for many websites. With a little knowledge of Search Engine Optimization you can improve your search engine rankings and as a result, increase your traffic. In this article I will reveal to you 6 tips that will help to get your website on the first page of the search results (which means a lot more traffic).

Titles and META Description - It is of utmost importance that your title and description include your targeted keywords. To show how important this is, try searching for the word Photoshop in Google - every result on the first page has Photoshop in the title and the description so you can safely assume that if your title and description don't include the word Photoshop you will be nowhere near the first page.

The description should just be a rephrasing of the title in a short paragraph. Your title and description do need to include your keywords but your main objective should be to make it interesting. On a search results page, your title, description and URL are all that the user sees so make them want MORE by keeping it interesting.

META Keywords - Search engines are putting less emphasis on META Keywords due to the problem of people spamming keywords to improve their rankings. Spamming keywords will no longer improve your rankings, in fact, it will probably earn your website a ranking penalty. META Keywords are less important than the title and description but you should still add them. Select the 10 or so most important keywords from your page and you're done.

URLs - URLs can be easily forgotten when doing SEO but they should not be overlooked. The worst possible URL you can have is to use ID numbers in your URL like http://www.tutorials-db.com/articles/15/ - this doesn't tell the search engine anything about the page. Instead you should have a descriptive URL such as http://www.tutorials-db.com/articles/Maximizing_Adsense_revenue_with_6_easy_tips/ which includes your keywords and uses underscores or hyphens instead of spaces. Using descriptive URLs will help your search engine rankings in a similar way to titles and META descriptions.

<h1> Headings - Search engines treat text within <h1> tags as more important than the other text, therefore, using <h1> tags helps the search engine to know which keywords you are targeting. For example: if your page is an article, you should put the title of the article in the <h1>tag and the sub-title in thetag. Using heading tags is important but they can look quite unattractive when they have no styling. This problem can be overcome by using CSS to improve the style of your headings by putting the following in your stylesheet and modifying it:
h1 {
font-size: 16px;
color: #333333;
}
Keywords Frequency - There is no perfect keyword frequency but through testing, people have found that around 5% frequency returns good results. That means that you should have your main keyword occur roughly once in every 20 words. Here is a tool you can use to check your keyword frequency.

Inbound Links - The above 5 steps are essential if you want to improve your search engine rankings but on their own you will be able to rank well for unpopular search terms but not for the more popular ones. To rank well for keywords with lots of competition you must build inbound links. If your inbound links have your keywords as the link e.g. Adsense Article Adsense Article you will get an added benefit compared to the rather plain and non-descriptive click here. Some of the main ways to build links are: linking from your forum signatures; buying paid advertising; trading links with other similar websites; or just writing great content so people link to it!

Now that you've worked on improving your SEO, you will probably want to monitor your search engine rankings. The best tool I can recommend is
Digital Point's Search Engine Keyword Tracker. But remember, never forget about your SEO, you should continue to tweak your SEO every few days and then check the keyword tracker once the search engines have reindexed your site. If you think you cant improve your SEO, feel free to stop tweaking and just continue to build inbound links. If you follow these six tips, soon enough you will be ranked first for your target keywords.
